Whitehorne
lies between 32nd Ave and 48th Ave (McKnight) NE and east of the 36th
Street shopping corridor. These communities were developed in the late
1970s and early 1980s. The community is primarily low density
residential with a mix of single family homes, townhomes, and low-rise
rental apartments. Whitehorn is the neighbourhood between 36nd Street
and 52 Street NE and all the streets begin with "White."
Temple is the neighbourhood between 52nd Street and 68th Street and all
the streets begin with "Temple." The community is serviced by
the Whitehorn LRT station on the Northeast leg.
Schools
The community is well-schooled with five public elementary and three
Catholic elementary schools. Public board high schools students go to
schools in their neighbourhood, while Catholic high school students must
attend their school just to the north. The community is readily
accessible to the University, SAIT and ACAD at the eastern end via the
LRT or via the Great Circle bus route (#72/73).
Shopping
The area is serviced by the small plazas along 52nd Street and by
Castleridge Mall to the north and Village Square Mall to the south. The
community is also close to the 32nd Street NE shopping corridor, with
several large malls.
Recreation
The area has a number of large parks. The Village Square Leisure Centre,
with various facilities including a wave pool, is just south of the
community. The new Prairie Winds Park, with an outdoor pool, is to the
north of the community. There are a number of restaurants (mostly
chains) along 32nd Avenue, east of 36th Street NE. Movie theatres are
close-by at London Towne Square and Marlborough. The city-owned McCall
Lake golf course is west on 32nd Avenue, just before the Deerfoot Trail.
