Altadore is situated in the southwest
quadrant of the city and enjoys city and mountain views. The community
was annexed to the City in 1907, but much of the area remained
undeveloped until the early 1950s. Houses from this period were
generally one storey, stucco bungalows located on 50 foot lots. Portions
of the community were rezoned for three storey apartments in the 1950s.
Apartment and four-plex redevelopment has occurred at a very slow pace
since that time. The plans for South Calgary emphasize the policies of
conservation and compatible infill development for the majority of the
community. The revitalization of the commercial areas on 33rd and 34th
Avenues is being accomplished through the work of the Business
Revitalization Zone, aptly name Marda Loop (the name of the early
streetcar line in this area).
Although most of the subdivision plans
for the area were registered between 1907 and 1914, most of the housing
development did not occur until the 1950's. Houses from this period were
generally one-storey, stucco bungalows located on 15 metre (50 foot)
lots. Altadore is close to major open spaces and recreational
opportunities are provided in River Park and the Glenmore Athletic
Field. The focus of the future plans for Altadore is to maintain
stability in the community by maintaining the stock of family-type
accommodations in the area.
