The Calgary Vipers scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, including a three-run homer by Drew Miller, but it was too little, too late as the Vipers dropped a 14-7 decision to the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Wednesday afternoon at Foothills Stadium.

The loss was the sixth in a row for the Vipers and the second straight series sweep. Evan Greusel (6-2) wound up taking the loss although he pitched an effective 6 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits while striking out four.

Josh Habel (5-7) picked up the win for Gary, giving up three unearned runs on just three hits in eight complete innings of work.

The RailCats opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Jermaine Allensworth brought in Tanner Townsend with an RBI single that made it 1-0. Gary added a second run in the top of the third on a run-scoring double by Kevin White. White had a big day for the RailCats, picking up three hits, two runs scored and four RBI.

Calgary cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning when Miller singled and came in to score all the way from first on a Jeff Butts double that was misplayed in the outfield by centre-fielder Allensworth.

Gary responded with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to move ahead 4-2. Steve Haake walked and Chris Curry singled before Ryan Graham drove them both in with a two-run double off Greusel.

The RailCats extended the lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. A two-run single from White and RBI doubles from Haake and Andy Rohleder keyed the Gary offense.

Brandon Rogers hit an RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh that scored Carlos Duncan, and then came in to score on a Josh Carter groundout to cut the lead to 8-3.

Gary added six runs over the final two innings to put the game out of reach. Jay Pecci, White and Rohleder all had run-scoring base hits in the eighth to put the RailCats up 12-3. A two-run homerun in the top of the ninth by Jarrod Patterson gave Gary a 14-3 lead.

Shaun Ashman hit an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth that scored Sharnol Adriana and Miller went deep with a three-run shot to centre field, his third of the season, to make it 14-7 but the Vipers couldn’t get any closer and wound up taking the loss.

The loss drops the Vipers to 10-15 in the second half as they will now prepare for a four game series in Edmonton against the Cracker-Cats beginning on Friday night. Calgary will return home on Tuesday, August 15th, to face the Kansas City T-Bones.
