As disposible income continues to rocket in Alberta it would appear that so to does the need for expensive toys for the boys.

Sales of new cars, trucks and vans in the province are leading the nation, up 5.4% from June of last year.

"Sales have generally been very strong in Alberta, as this was only the second decrease for the province in eight months," said StatsCan.

Alberta was one of only two provinces to post a year-over-year increase, according to the seasonally adjusted figures.

Newfoundland and Labrador, which experienced a 9.9% boost in sales from May to June, saw a jump of 3.1% over June 2005.

Across Canada, new motor vehicle sales slumped for a third straight month, slipping 0.6% from May.

The biggest reason for the decline over the last three months was sagging truck sales.

Compared to June 2005, sales of trucks, vans and buses were down 8.6% and sales of North American vehicles were off 3.2%.

Sales of overseas vehicles, meanwhile, rose 10.9% year-over-year.
